What’s the Difference Between Cinnamon Rolls and Cinnamon Buns?

Often used interchangeably, the two are not quite the same. Both breakfast options are created with a yeast dough that is covered with a cinnamon sugar mixture and sliced into rolls. However, the most recognizable difference is in their appearance.

For instance, cinnamon buns were originally brought to America by German immigrants. Unlike cinnamon rolls which are marked by their extra fluffy appearance and topped with a sweet glaze, cinnamon buns are full of nuts and have a shinier exterior that more closely resembles what we think of as bread rolls.

Common Questions about Cinnamon Rolls with Caramel and Chocolate Chips

Can you make cinnamon rolls with caramel and chocolate chips ahead?

Yes! Prepare them the night before and store them in the fridge overnight. In the morning, let them come to room temperature for 30 minutes before baking for perfectly fresh, warm rolls.

Why isn’t my caramel sauce thickening?

It’s important to give it plenty of time! Be patient and cook it at medium heat until it reaches the desired thickness. Rushing the process or cooking at too high heat can prevent proper caramelization.

What type of chocolate chips work finest in cinnamon rolls?

Semi-sweet chocolate chips are our go-to! They hold their shape while baking and offer the reliable balance of sweetness.

Can I add nuts to my caramel and chocolate chip cinnamon rolls?

Definitely! Chopped pecans or walnuts add a bit of crunchiness that complements the gooey caramel and melty chocolate. Simply sprinkle them over the dough before baking.
