Ingredients You’ll Need for Crock Pot Candy

  • Vanilla Bark – Commonly found in the baking section in most grocery stores, vanilla bark is made for melting and should not be replaced with a white chocolate candy bar.
  • Dark Chocolate Bark – Similar to vanilla bark, chocolate bark is a type of chocolate intended for use in candies. Unlike candy bars, it is made with cocoa and sweetened condensed milk, making it extra rich and reliable for melting.
  • Chocolate Chips – We used dark chocolate chips for a rich flavor, but any variety you like finest will work for this crock pot candy. Just keep in mind that it will alter the taste just slightly based on what you use.
  • Hazelnut Butter – Any store-bought or from-scratch hazelnut butter will work!
  • Hazelnuts – For an extra nutty flavor and crunch, we used both whole roasted hazelnuts and chopped hazelnuts. Feel free to swap out the nuts for almonds, peanuts, or anything you prefer. However, make sure that the skins are removed on whatever you choose to use.
  • Sea Salt Flakes – To balance out the sweet chocolate and create a bit of extra crunch, we prefer to use Maldon sea salt. It’s a gourmet salt that has been crystallized to form larger flakes that are tasty! Technically, the salt is optional. However, it really enhances the flavor of the chocolate.

Simple Variations

Of course, these chocolates are super tasty on their own. However, feel free to experiment with extra add-ins and variations as well! To get started, take a look at some of our go-to additions below.

  • Make them Holiday-Friendly. By adding festive sprinkles or molding the chocolates into fun shapes, you can easily make them reliable for all your go-to holidays!
  • Add Texture. Sprinkling in a few coconut flakes adds a slightly chewy texture we love.
  • Make them Nut-Free. If you’re looking for a more allergy-friendly option, replace the hazelnuts with Rice Chex or a crackly rice cereal to keep the crunch with none of the nuts.

How Long Does It Last?

When stored in an airtight container, crock pot candy will stay fresh at room temperature or in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Or, store it in the freezer for up to 18 months!

How to Freeze Crock Pot Candy

Place your chocolates in a sealable bag, and squeeze out as much excess air as possible. Then, place the bag in the freezer! To prevent the candy from sticking together, you can wrap each piece in parchment paper before freezing. Then, when you’re ready to eat, let the candy thaw in the fridge overnight or at room temperature.

Common Questions about Hazelnut Chocolate Crock Pot Candy

Do you store crock pot candy in the refrigerator?

Refrigerating hazelnut chocolate crock pot candy isn’t necessary but can help it last longer! Room temperature storage in an airtight container is perfectly fine in most climates and preserves the optimal texture. However, if your house is warm or you want to extend the shelf life beyond two weeks, refrigeration works well. Just be aware that the cold can sometimes cause a white “bloom” on chocolate, which doesn’t affect the taste but changes the appearance slightly.

What other nuts can I use in crock pot candy?

While hazelnuts create that classic chocolate-hazelnut flavor combo, you can absolutely experiment with other nuts! Pecans are a traditional choice for many crock pot candy recipes, offering a buttery sweetness. Almonds provide a lovely crunch, while macadamias add rich creaminess. For a fun twist, try a mix of pistachios and dried cherries, or go nut-free with pretzels, cereal, or crushed cookies instead!

Why did my chocolate seize in the crock pot?

Chocolate seizing (turning grainy and stiff) in the crock pot usually happens when moisture gets introduced! Even a tiny drop of water can cause this chemical reaction in chocolate. To prevent seizing when making hazelnut chocolate crock pot candy, make sure your crock pot and all utensils are completely dry before starting. Also, avoid removing the lid too often, as condensation can form and drip back into the chocolate.

How do you harden crock pot candy?

After spooning your hazelnut chocolate crock pot candy onto wax paper or parchment, it typically hardens at room temperature within 1-2 hours! For faster setting, you can pop the trays in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Adding a small amount of coconut oil or paramount crystals to your chocolate mixture can help it set with a nice shine. The hardening time may vary depending on the chocolate types used and the humidity in your kitchen.
